User generated PR
I got the possibility to talk about “User generated PR - Opportunities and Threats for Universities in the Social Media Context” at the University of Zadar on last Friday. The workshop was part of the EU Tempus Programm to improve PR of Croatian Universities. They invited PR Professionals from Universities in Croatia, Slovenia, Czech Republic and Austria to participate at the 2 days workshop. I uploaded my presentation to SlideShare so that all the participants and interested users have access to the file.
here are the two video files that I used in my slides:

YouTube Playlist Feature
Thanks to Igor Schwartinski for showing me the playlist feature of YouTube.
This is the thing I was always waiting for. With the playlist feature you can let YouTube play the videos of your playlist in a row. This may not sound so interesting because it’s a basic feature of every iPod, iPhone or you name the device. But in case of YouTube it brings the platform to a new level. It’s not just uploading and sharing your videos anymore, now you can use it as a web radio or as internet music collection and this for free. Have you already experienced that you find a lot of songs and even videos of your favorite artists at YouTube? Even the latest tracks and some live mixes are online and only in a few cases I couldn’t find the song I was looking for. For me this makes YouTube to a very interesting alternative to the hype machine.
With the send-a-friend option and sharing of your playlists you have the same concept like iMix in iTunes. If everyone is tagging the songs right YouTube should be able to suggest you new music that you will like, based on the playlists of the other users - goodbye last.fm. So if you have unlimited internet access with your iPhone you don’t need to buy any music from Apple you can get everything for free from YouTube.
Do only I get the feeling that Google is doing a lot of things right?
lift conference

Like in the last 2 years the lift conference (challenges and opportunities of technology in society) takes place in Geneva (Switzerland) from the 6.-8. of February 2008. I’m a bit angry at myself that I was to lazy to apply for the GRS Fellowship, anyway congratulations to Bernhard Schindlholzer who got one fellowship.
In my opinion the concept of the conference looks really interesting with a mix of barcamp, networking and conference. The presentations about user experience of Genevieve Bell, Younghee Jung and Paul Dourish sound really interesting and I would like know if Holme Friebe has something new to add about cooperation and collaborative work?
Let’s see, maybe I will take some days off and go the Geneva.
Randy Pausch - Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams
Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch, who is dying from pancreatic cancer, gave his last lecture at the university Sept. 18, 2007. Pausch talked about his lessons learned and gave advice to students on how to achieve their own career, personal goals and karma.
Definitely one of the most impressive speeches I have ever heard.
The Long Tail

Some weeks ago I finally managed it to read “the long tail” by Chris Anderson. I can really recommend you his book, because Chris explains very simple the shift in the demand/supply side due to trends of digitalization. There are no more superstars - the wide range of supply is the new hero and driver for demand. Even the theory is already some years old, I think it still has major influence on the way we structure and look at our business. Especially in combination with the democratization of technology, production, distribution and the new opportunities in digital networks it has the possibility to totally change the way we will make business in the future.
Some days ago I watched the keynote of Norbert Bolz at the Next07 Conference about “the future of interactive media”. He uses the Pareto distribution and the long tail theory to explain the power of niches in the new media context, which leads to like-mindedness among all involved parties and boost the power of blogs within this group. Take a look, it’s really interesting how he compares the traditional media and user generated content.
